On Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 6:00 p.m., Andy Liebner will be at Dark Horse Books to discuss and sign his new book, Wild Shot. Mr. Liebner grew up in Alaska and competed in cross-country skiing most of his life.  He was a top ranked junior and collegiate cross-country skier. His drive and ambition has taken him across the country to learn from and compete against the top athletes in cross-country skiing and biathlon. But what really sets this book apart is Mr. Liebner’s self-awareness of his role as an American warrior. Mr. Liebner sees quest to be a top world-class athlete as a heroic journey. When I read this section of his new book, my attention was captured. I completely agree with his premise. There is no doubt that sport competitions worldwide makes a powerful connection with its audience. I have always attribute it to our love for athletic competition with  human need to recognize and applaud courage,  strength,   perseverance,  and skill. Sports also celebrate our physical bodies being developed and trained to its full ability. So Sports represent a heroic journey in which the hero must make best use of  his mental and physical strengths, while dealing with his mental and physical weaknesses. We applaud the winners of these competitions, but we also applaud the valiant efforts of those who fail.  Because as I  mentioned in a previous post, we are all on a heroic quest in this life. So in addition, to the cross-country skiers and biathlon athletes, Mr. Liebner and his book has something that should interest everyone. Please come and enjoy the evening with Mr. Liebner. We will have refreshments.
