Review by Emma Poirier

When the world of Faeries meets the world of the powerful Rothschild family, you get the novel “Extraordinary”. The author of this novel constantly keeps you on edge with her intriguing story line and suspenseful twists that are placed throughout the entirety of the book. Pheobe Rothschild, our Heroine, is a well developed character who feels what many teenage girls go through in the struggle of finding herself and wondering just what is truly important in life, making her very easy to relate to. She experiences everyday problems along with her supernatural issues that make the book almost believable. The other characters are also very well developed and easy to connect to. It’s fascinating to see the development that takes place among several characters and see how their views and hearts change. The imagery of the story was abundant, but not so over-whelming that it left nothing to the imagination.. It almost feel as if you are in Faerie as you see it through Pheobe’s eyes.
While this book did have a bit of romance, it’s main focus was on friendship and how powerful it truly is. It was a relief from the conventional fantasy novel, which always ends with the hero and the heroine, the prince and the princess, the lady and the farm boy, the damsel and the knight, going off and living happily ever after. Pheobe’s love life is there for not a source of enjoyment for romance lovers, but for the development of Pheobe’s character and for the progression of the story. It ends as merely a side-note as the book comes to a close.
The ending is far from what would be anticipated from this book. It had the perfect ending, one that was actually quite bittersweet. In a way, it represents rebirth and the start of a new era for the Faerie realm. A perfect ending for a wonderful book.
The hardback edition of Extraordinary will come out in September of 2010. It will be $17.99
