Recommended Readings on Lewis & Clark
This is part of a list we distributed at the One Book One Community discussions relating to Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose. It was compiled, in part, by Tim McNeil, one of our One Book presenters, summer 2005. The parenthetical comments are Jeanne’s, and of course, these are among the Western History titles we regularly carry at Dark Horse (and Undaunted Courage remains discounted 10%.)
The Journals of Lewis & Clark, Bernard DeVoto (a single-volume, well-edited and ery readable version of the journals.)
Sign-Talker by James Alexander Thom. (This is an account of the Corps of Discovery from the perspective of George Drouillard, the Indian/French hunter and interpreter for Lewis and Clark…. historical fiction at its best, and because the Teton Valley Women’s Book Group read and discussed it, it’s also discounted 10% at DHB.)
Plants of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, by H. Wayne Phillips. (Wayne was one of the most popular presenters featured during the Undaunted Courage One Book. It includes detailed information about the flora along the trail, organized by section and well illusrated with color photographs and journal quotes.)
The Captain’s Dog: My Journey with the Lewis and Clark Tribe, by Roland Smith. (A fun story for young readers, from the perspective of Seaman, Meriwether Lewis’ dog, who accompanied the expedition — and saved them from several disasters along the way.)
Lewis and Clark among the Indians, by James P. Ronda. (This book, re-released for the Bicentennial of the Corps of Discovery, examines the relationship between the Expedition and the Native American peoples they met, along with an insightful look at the role played by Sacagawea and her son.)
The Truth about Sacajawea, by Kenneth Thomasma. (Ken, who hails from Wilson, Wyoming, next door — and was instrumental in the creation of the Sacajawea dollar coin – examines the young guide’s role for young readers, with journal entries, interpretation and many illustrations.)
There are many MANY more wonderful books about Lewis and Clark. Come on by to check them out sometime!
