When you are not outdoors, enjoying the wide variety of winter sports, available in Teton Valley, a good book is the perfect way to spend a winter evening. Dark Horse Books has new mysteries and fantasy books in stock as well as literature and non-fiction.

With the start of the new year, we have made some changes. Dark Horse Books now has used books for sale. Over the next few months, we hope to expand and widen our collection of used books. Also, we have over 800 used comic books for sale for the low, low price of $1.00. There is Spiderman, Superman, Batman, Star Wars, X-men and much, much more.

World Book Night April 23, 2012

World Book Night is scheduled for April 23, 2012. To quote from its website:

“We need 50,000 book-loving volunteers to fan out across America on April 23, 2012! Just take 20 free copies of a book to a location in your community, and you just might change someone’s life.

The goal is to give books to new readers, to encourage reading, to share your passion for a great book. The entire publishing, bookstore, library, author, printing, and paper community is behind this effort with donated services and time. And with a million free World Book Night paperbacks!”

We need volunteers from Teton Valley to give free books out to people who don’t read books. Dark Horse Books has volunteer to be a distribution center where the book givers can pick up their copies of the free books. We will have a fun party that evening for all of the valley givers. Last night, we voted on the next six months of books for the book club. I am personally very excited about the book selections. For February, seven free copies of Night Road have been distributed. When you finish the book, please bring the book back to the bookstore for others to read. I am also getting paperback copies of the book, which will be available for purchase. After a wonderfully extended summer throughout September, Teton Valley is now enjoying crisp mornings and fall colors. Almost all of the potatoes have been harvested and the last crop of hay has been cut and baled. In the next few weeks, there are plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy the lovely autumn weather.

On Tuesday, October 18, 2011, Passafire and Tatanka will be playing reggae rock at the Knotty Pine. Before the concert at 8:00 p.m. Hd Teton and Mark Fisher will be premiering short films. The advance tickets are only $10.00. Yes TEN BUCKS for two bands and a film premier of the short films of two highly talented local filmmakers. There really is no excuse to miss this event. Advance tickets are available at Big Hole Music and Dark Horse Books.

On Thursday, October 20, 2011 from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00, support the Family Safety Network by attending the Salsa with Calle Mambo at Warbirds Café in Driggs. There will be a 10 piece latin jazz band, a salsa dance instructor and a dance contest. Also enjoy tapas and a cash bar. The advance tickets are $15.00 and are available at Corner Drug, Big Hole Music, Victor Emporium, and Trailside General Store. Thank you to Isabell Waddell Allstate Agency for sponsoring this event for the valley.

On Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at 6:00 p.m., the Dark Horse Books writing group is meeting. If you want to write, this group is a great way to get motivated.

On Friday, October 28, 2011 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., get dressed in your best costume and dance at the Monster Mash Halloween Party at the Teton Arts Council Studios. Advance tickets are $15.00 in advance, there are available at MerLo, Miso Hungry, Guchiebird’s, Teton Thai, or the Brakeman American Grill.

On Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 11:00 a.m., bring your little ones to Dark Horse Books for some scary Halloween stories, games, and activities.

On Monday, October 31, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., bring your kids to downtown Driggs for trick or treating. It is a fun event.

November is National Novel Writing Month. During the month of November, people make the commitment to write a 50,000-word novel in 30 days. Starting in 1999 with 21 San Francisco friends, it has expanded into a worldwide event. And yes, some nanowrimo novels are eventually published. Once again Dark Horse Books will be participating in the Write In. Every week, local authors can come spend a few quiet hours writing at Dark Horse Books. There will be refreshments and coffee. Banned Book Week at Dark Horse Books

September 24 through October 1

Once again Dark Horse Books will be celebrating our freedom to read freely with Banned Book Week. Throughout the week, many banned and challenged titles will be discounted twenty percent. Included are such threatening and dangerous books as Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, Holes by Louis Sachar, James and the Giant Peach by James Dahl, Anne Frank the Diary of a Young Girl, The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, the Twilight series by Stehanie Meyers, and the House of Night series by Cast. Come check out the variety of banned and challenged books. Then on Saturday, October 1, 2011 from noon until 1:00 p.m., Dark Horse Books will be joining in the Internet Read-Out. Ed Draft of Teton Hd will be filming Dark Horse Books customers reading passages of their favorite banned books. The video will then be sent to American Booksellers Foundation for Free Speech for inclusion on their youtube channel. Everyone is welcome to participate. However, it will be necessary to sign a release of the video. Also, minors will need to get their parent’s written permission.

On Monday, October 3, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. The Teton Valley Women’s Book Club will be meeting to discuss The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford. This group is open and there is still time to pick up a copy and join the discussion.

On Saturday, October 8, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. it will be Curiosity Day at Dark Horse Books. We will be reading Curious George, enjoying games, and giving out treat bags.

On Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 6:00 p.m., the Dark Horse Books writing group will be meeting. This is an open group and anyone interested in writing is welcome.

Fall Hours Due to the slowdown in foot traffic, Dark Horse Books will be closing at 6:00 p.m. until Thanksgiving. After Thanksgiving, the evening hours will be extended to 7:00 p.m. until Spring Break.

The days are shorter, the nights are longer and there is a crisp snap to the air. It is a perfect time to find a good book to read. On the blog, I have posted a review of one of this year’s best books. I was fortunate to receive an advance reading copy. The Orchard by Theresa Weir has been recommended by Indie Next List for October, the O magazine, and many others. Below is my own review.

There is an old Roberta Flack song from the 70s, which perfectly describes the intense, powerful reaction we all have to transcendental art. With her words, “killing me softly with his song, telling my life with his words, strumming my pain with his fingers,” Flack described with perfection the experience of art transcending the ordinary. With her memoir, The Orchard, Theresa Weir has created such a transcendental work of art. The Orchard begins in the mid-70s, Weir, in her early twenties, is struggling with the hard work of becoming her own person and taking her place in this world. Then one day, a beautiful young farmer comes into the rural Illinois bar where she worked. Their romance leads to a hasty marriage. But Weir does not tell us a fairy tale romance. Her love story is told without sentimentally, respecting the deep mystery of love shared by two strangers. She moves to the farmer’s orchard, where perfection is sought at too high a cost. This memoir deals with powerful universal themes regarding mothers, abandonment, dark secrets, poison, love, death, and life. Like the singer in Flack’s song, Weir’s words will resonate with the reader, because in telling her life story, she tells us about our lives.
